TYLER, Texas — The 55th Texas State Open tees off Tuesday at the Cascades Golf and Country Club in Tyler.
The competition will feature both pro and amateur golfers competing for a hefty prize purse. This is the eighth consecutive year the tournament has been held at the Cascades.
“It’s a great venue,” Steven Clements, communications manager for Northern Texas PGA, said. “We love being in the East Texas community and being able to show off high level professional golf out here in East Texas.”
This year’s field includes golfers from 12 states and 10 countries, including defending champion Tanner Napier. Clements says the top finisher at this year’s competition will be taking home a massive chunk of change.
“Our champion on Friday is gonna go home with $40,000 which is a huge payday for anybody,” Clements said.
Aside from the players topping the podium, Cindy Smoak from the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce says the city should also pull in some dollars as a result of the tournament.
“It brings new people into the city who spend new money, which puts new dollars into our economy,” Smoak said. “It puts us on the map as a sports destination, and it brings a lot of new people into the community.”
Smoak says that with all of the sporting events that take place in Tyler, athletic events are an important contributor when it comes to the city’s economy.
Clements is hoping the East Texas golf fans show up in force all week long.
“It’s free for all spectators,” he said. “Come enjoy some high level championship golf.”
The Texas State Open runs from July 29 to August 1 at the Cascades Golf and Country Club.
