Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell announces he will not seek reelection

Birdwell has represented Senate District 22 since 2010.

WACO, Texas — Texas State Senator Brian Birdwell has announced he will not seek reelection.

Birdwell has represented Senate District 22, which includes Waco and Marlin, as well as the Eastland area and a portion of Arlington, for 15 years after winning a special election in 2010, according to the Texas Senate.

Birdwell describes himself as a “lifelong conservative Republican” and served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Lt. Col.

Birdwell currently serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources, which is responsible for “legislation relevant to the oil and gas industry, air quality, waste and environmental permitting and quality at the state and local level,” according to the Senate. The Committee also reportedly oversees the Texas Railroad Commission and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

“It has been the high honor of my life, on par with commanding United States soldiers, to serve my fellow Texans for over 15 years,” Birdwell said in a statement.

In the statement, Birdwell thanked Jesus Christ, his wife Mel, his constituents, his colleagues in the Senate and Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick for their support over the years.

“Thank you for your unwavering support across the years, and for your part in helping ensure Texas remains strong and free,” Birdwell concluded. “I will not only cherish the time I have had as your State Senator, but I will also cherish the remaining time in the interim until I officially depart.”

Birdwell’s seat will be up for reelection in 2026.
