The buzz surrounding Brian Schottenheimer continued into Wednesday.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The buzz surrounding Brian Schottenheimer as the next Dallas Cowboys coach is heating up.
After his interview with the Cowboys brass on Tuesday afternoon, reports surfaced that the Cowboys are looking to bring Schottenheimer back for a second interview Wednesday.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Todd Archer reported on the second interview Wednesday, shortly before noon. WFAA’s Joe Trahan confirmed that the Cowboys are “continuing the conversation with another session” Wednesday.
Archer later reported that discussions between the team and coach ended later Wednesday night with “nothing to report regarding status for now.”
The Cowboys have not commented publicly on Schottenheimer’s chances at the job, only confirming they interviewed him Tuesday.
Schottenheimer has been the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys the last two seasons, although former head coach Mike McCarthy called the plays.
DraftKings earlier this week listed Schottenheimer as the betting favorite by far. The Schottenheimer pick earlier this week was favored at -250 odds, and that was before Schottenheimer’s pair of interviews this week.
Kellen Moore, who was previously the favorite, dropped down to +250 odds.
So why is Schottenheimer favored? Sportsbooks don’t have any insider information, and odds are generally set based on the bets placed. But his rise up the odds boards coincided with the buzz surrounding him up at The Star in Frisco.
Who is Brian Schottenheimer?
Schottenheimer has been in Dallas for two seasons, but he’s been an offensive coordinator in the NFL since 2006. Despite his nearly 20-year tenure as an OC, he’s never been a head coach. Even as Dallas’ OC, he was never the primary play-caller with McCarthy at the helm.
Schottenheimer would be a surprising pick due to his lack of experience as a head coach, and based on social media reaction, his name doesn’t seem to elicit excitement among fans.
Even if Schottenheimer is the betting favorite, there’s no telling if he’s Jerry Jones’ favorite. But he’s the first known candidate to get a second interview, if that indeed becomes the case Wednesday.
