The Black Keys make their return to Austin with a new documentary

The rock duo’s new film documents their rise to fame from their first recordings in a basement in Ohio.

AUSTIN, Texas — American rock duo The Black Keys have made their return to Austin for South By Southwest (SXSW). Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney’s new film, “This Is a Film About the Black Keys,” premiered at SXSW.

Their new film documents the journey of Auerbach and Carney starting from barely knowing each other and making their first recordings in a basement in Akron, Ohio, to selling out stages around the world.

“It’s like we won the lottery being placed a block from each other as kids,” Auerbach said.

“I think finding the person to go on the adventure with and do the projects with, that’s the hardest part,” Carney said. “Most people never find that.”

It’s been almost 10 years since the duo was back performing in Austin, but they still look fondly toward visiting the live music capital. They performed at Austin City Limits back in 2015.

“It’s one-of-a-kind … It’s a one-of-a-kind city,” said Auerbach.

“This Is a Film About the Black Keys” premiered Monday, March 11 at the Paramount Theatre. They will also be giving a keynote speech on Thursday, March 14, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
