The City of Galveston officially has a Guinness World Record

GALVESTON, Texas — Galveston is preparing to make history this weekend, as history is remembered along its iconic Seawall.

On Saturday, September 6, the city will attempt to set a new Guinness world record for the longest walkway. Thousands of people will for a human link on the Seawall. It’s a living tribute to the resilience of the island and the more than 8,000 lives lost in the Great Storm of 1900.

Organizers are asking for 8,125 people to join hands along the Seawall to create a human chain that will stretch for miles. It marks the 125th anniversary of the devastating hurricane that reshaped the city and led to the construction of the Seawall.

KHOU 11’s Michelle Choi will be on the island covering the record-breaking attempt on KHOU 11 Morning News beginning at 9 a.m.

The day’s events begin with lineup at 8:45 a.m. on the Seawall, followed by a photo opportunity and drone flyover at 9 a.m. A ceremony at the Great Storm Statue in front of the San Luis Resort will take place at 9:30 a.m., featuring remarks from Galveston Mayor Craig Brown and other community leaders.

Participation is free and open to all ages, though registration is required. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Parking along the Seawall will be free until 10 a.m.

The event will happen rain or shine.
