The nose that knew: Honoring the life and work of K-9 officer Bella

The Fort Bend County Fire Marshal mourns the loss of its first arson K-9 officer.

HOUSTON — The Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s office is mourning the loss of K-9 officer Bella, who died on Monday.

Bella was a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, born in Hungary. She faithfully served starting in 2016, becoming the county’s first-ever accelerant detection canine.

The fire marshal’s office described her as “highly trained, incredibly focused, and deeply loyal.” She was trained at the Houston K9 Academy by then-Lt. Steven McDonald, graduating with honors and quickly establishing herself as a vital asset in arson investigations in Fort Bend County and neighboring jurisdictions.

Known for her precision, loyalty and unwavering focus, Bella played a critical role in determining the origins and causes of suspicious fires throughout her career. She was recognized as one of the top-trained arson K-9s in the nation.

Bella retired in July 2021 with her handler, McDonald, but her legacy and impact lasted far beyond her working years. She remained a cherished member of the department, remembered not only for her skills but for her gentle spirit and playful nature, especially when tennis balls were involved.

“Rest easy, Officer Bella,” the department said in a statement. “You’ve more than earned your rest — may it be filled with endless treats, fields to run, and peace beyond the rainbow bridge.”
