The Ritz Theatre announces anticipated re-opening date

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An anticipated date has been announced for the Ritz Theatre that is located in downtown Corpus Christi on N. Chaparral Street.

The theatre was once the go-to spot in the early 1900’s but it closed its doors almost 60 years later in 1989.

3NEWS spoke with executive director of the theatre who said thanks to recent grants the non-profit received in the last couple of months, the ball is rolling on work to bring the theatre back to life and ready to house the community.

Executive Director Cheryl Votzmeyer-Rios tells 3NEWS those funds are helping to pay for work on a water breach that needs to be sealed before additional work can resume to get the theatre ready for all to enjoy.

“Our last several decades have not been able to experience anything like this so a lot of people drive up to San Antonio, to the Majestic Theatre, which is an atmospheric theatre just like the Ritz. It’s ornate, it’s beautiful, of course we’re not to the scale of the Majestic, which is 3,000 people. We can seat 1,000 but this will be for our community to come and enjoy,” Votzmeyer-Rios said.

The theatre is expected to have plenty to offer including: Matinees, dances, concerts, arts-education and more.

As for when that is planned to happened, we are told they hope to be open in 2029, in time to celebrate the nostalgic theatre’s 100th birthday.
