The trendiest headlines heading toward an epic matchup as the Chiefs and Eagles meet on football’s biggest stage for the second time in three years.
TEMPLE, Texas — While this year’s Super Bowl offers the Philadelphia Eagles the chance to avenge their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs from two years ago, the headlines off the field are drawing as much attention as the game itself.
Whether it’s artists performing, major advertisers hoping to impress a mass audience or football news going into next season, here are headlines people can’t stop talking about.
Kansas City and Philadelphia, a rematch of Super Bowl 57
Kansas City looks to become the first three-peat champion in National Football League history. While some teams have previously reached the Super Bowl three straight years, none have done so and been undefeated.
Kansas City has three of the last five championship rings and has lost once with Patrick Mahomes as quarterback. A year before defeating the San Francisco 49ers, the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35.
According to ESPN, teams have won back-to-back Super Bowls nine times in the NFL’s history. The New England Patriots lost to the Eagles in 2018 and are the last franchise to reach three consecutive Super Bowls (2017-2019).
Drake and Kendrick Lamar and the halftime show
The biggest beef in recent rap history spawned a song that just won five Grammys and may be performed at the Super Bowl this weekend.
It wasn’t always this way. They once were collaborators: On Drake’s 2011 track “Buried Alive Interlude,” on Lamar’s 2012 release “Poetic Justice,” and on A$AP Rocky’s “(Expletive) ’ Problems” that same year.
It didn’t last long. In 2013, the Pulitzer Prize winner Lamar was featured on Big Sean’s “Control,” in which he called out a slew of contemporary rappers including J. Cole, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Big Sean himself and Drake.
Commercials
It’s that time of year in advertising. The time of year when wild meets comical as A-list celebrities highlight epic commercials for big-name companies. Yes, we’re talking about Super Bowl commercials.
With a few Super Bowl commercial spots going for a record $8 million for 30 seconds this year, the stakes have never been higher.
First-time and newer advertisers are courting outrageousness and using stunts to stand out in the battle to capture the attention of the more than 120 million viewers expected to tune into Sunday’s game.
NFL in Ireland in 2025
Dublin will host Ireland’s first NFL regular-season game when the Pittsburgh Steelers play at Croke Park in 2025, the league announced Friday, two days before the Chiefs and Eagles meet in the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
The Irish capital joins Madrid and Berlin as first-time hosts next season as the league expands its global footprint.
Ticket prices drop in the week leading to kickoff
Ticket prices plummeted three days before the Chiefs and Eagles are slated to face each other on the gridiron. Some tickets cost $3,643 (before taxes and fees), but the price dropped by a thousand, offering the chance to pay $2,643 to watch the biggest football game of the year.
Ticket prices have increased since Thursday, but the 30% drop in cost came much quicker than in the last five years, according to Gametime.
