‘The urgent need to modernize’ | FAA blames telecom failures, outdated systems for Dallas flight delays

Flights at both major Dallas-Fort Worth airports were impacted by a telecommunications issue, according to the FAA.

DALLAS — Hundreds of flights were delayed at DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field on Friday afternoon, and some of that carried into Saturday, as the Federal Aviation Administration reported that telecommunications issues were affecting their processes.

The FAA was still reporting “intermittent outages” and subsequent flight delays Saturday morning, according to Love Field officials, although flights at Love Field were operating normally Saturday morning.

Still, Love Field officials said they did “not have a definite resolution time” for when the FAA issues would be fixed.

At DFW Airport, there were 63 cancellations and 89 delays as of Saturday morning.

The issue was first reported Friday afternoon.

“The FAA reported an issue involving the telecommunications provider for the air traffic control facility that oversees the airspace in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” American Airlines said in a statement. “As a result, the FAA has severely limited flights into both DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field, which is affecting our operation.”

Several other regional airports were also impacted, but were given the all-clear as of shortly before 5 p.m.

“Passenger safety is DAL’s top priority, and we are in constant communication with our partners, including the FAA, as they work to manage the situation and minimize disruptions,” Dallas Love Field added.

Southwest Airlines said in a statement that, “inbound flights to DAL have either been slowed or are being held at their departure airports. A handful of our flights diverted, and we are working to get them back on track as soon as the FAA gives the go-ahead.”

The FAA said it was working with the telephone company to determine the cause. American Airlines said travelers who were impacted can rebook without change fees.

Just after 7:30 p.m., flight delays at Love Field have been lifted, and the airport has given the all-clear.

DFW Airport lifted its ground stop around 9:30 p.m.

As of 11 p.m. on Friday, more than 500 flights had been delayed at DFW Airport, according to FlightAware data.
