SAN ANTONIO — A downtown hotel is set for a makeover, turning into more than 200 new units and expanding affordable housing in the Alamo City.
The San Antonio Housing Trust (SAHT) approved a project on Dec. 1. that will transform an existing hotel property, located on 425 Bonham Street, into a 220-unit residential community. The property, which was originally built in 1996 and last renovated in 2004, will be called The Whitney.
According to District 1 officials, this particular investment will bring in a 93% community benefit ratio over 10 years, which helps the overall goal of providing more affordable housing to the downtown area.
“With the approved transaction of this property, more individuals and families in need can obtain affordable housing in downtown,” said District 1 Councilwoman Dr. Sukh Kaur. “The approval of the Whitney is a strategic investment in expanding workforce housing within walking distance of the Alamo, Hemisfair, and potential Spurs arena.”
The redevelopment project, headed by Good homes, will include 5 units at 40% AMI (Area Median Income), 35 units at 50% AMI, and 71 units at 80% AMI, with the remainder at market.
