HOUSTON — Residents across Texas could be owed some money that they don’t even know about.
The state is currently holding about $10.5 billion in unclaimed property, including nearly $2 billion in unclaimed property in the Houston area.
The holidays are typically an expensive time of the year, so now is a good time to see if you can get some extra cash.
“Every dollar in our Unclaimed Property program belongs to a Texan, not the government,” Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock said. “This time of year, especially, even a small amount can make a meaningful difference for families. I encourage every household in the Houston area to take a moment to search — it’s simple, it’s secure and it just might put a little extra money back in your pocket for the holidays.”
In the Houston area, the unclaimed assets range from small reimbursements to substantial payouts.
What could be unclaimed?
- Forgotten bank accounts
- Uncashed checks
- Utility deposits
- Insurance proceeds
- Mineral royalties
Other types of funds turned over to the state when businesses cannot locate the rightful owner
How to search
You can search for unclaimed property by visiting ClaimItTexas.gov and entering your name or the names of your family members into the search tool.
If the state is holding anything under the name, it will pop up with simple instructions to submit a claim.
It’s free and available to all Texans.
“With many Texans feeling the pinch of holiday spending, this is an opportunity to recover money that may have been forgotten years ago,” Hancock said.
