These four San Antonio-area companies made job cuts this year

While large companies in the San Antonio area seem to have made it out of the most sizable of the pandemic tide of layoffs, not all of them were able to come out of 2022 without cutting jobs. In total, about 1,000 employees were laid off from these big companies that have an office or are based in the San Antonio and New Braunfels areas. 

The Coleman Co. closed its plant in New Braunfels, resulting in over 100 people losing their jobs.

Coleman Co. – New Braunfels

This one came as a bit of a shock to the New Braunfels area as the company behind the popular brand of ice chests and other thermal insulated products closed its local factory after 40 years. Coleman Co. said the closure would affect 150 employees. 

The rest of the layoffs were set to go into effect in December.

USAA Bank – San Antonio

USAA Federal Savings Bank, the banking branch of the larger San Antonio-based insurance and financial services company, laid off more than 90 employees in its mortgage department in April after a tough year for home loans. 

Then USAA Bank laid off an unknown amount employees in August. The numbers were reportedly in the triple digits. USAA Bank had 16,800 employees at the end of last year.

TaskUs – New Braunfels

The customer service and call center company based in New Braunfels, TaskUs, has been used by some of the biggest online companies, such as Uber and Tinder. The company cut 500 jobs in the U.S. in August to lower costs and had plans to cut more.

This builder of Naval defense ships had a total of 202 layoffs across two divisions at its San Antonio offices, according to a list of Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices. Huntington Ingalls Industries first laid off 134 people in Defense and Federal Solutions in December, and then announced 68 more layoffs in December in the Mission Technologies division.
