‘They didn’t deserve what happened to them’ | Father of 6-year-old boy who died after he was allegedly in a hot car opens up about grief

A mother claims she found her two children in a hot car Saturday afternoon. She is now facing charges related to their deaths.

SAN ANTONIO — A grieving father is waiting for answers in the death of his son who investigators say was discovered in a hot car Saturday by his mother.

Bexar County deputies were called to a home in the 7000 block of Chancery Gate on the northwest side after reports of children inside a hot vehicle.

Investigators say 6-year-old Sevani Stevenson and his 3-year-old sister, Miyani Islar, died at the scene.

Their mother, 28-year-old Tiona Islar, is facing two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury or death. Sheriff Javier Salazar said her story contained too many inconsistencies.

She told investigators she last saw her children around 8 a.m. when she went down for a nap. Around 3 p.m., she said she noticed the front door was open and discovered the children unconscious.

“My son and his sister, they didn’t deserve what happened to them,” said Jerrean Stevenson, Sevani’s father.

Jerrean Stevenson lives in South Carolina. He said Sevani was his only child and had moved with his mother to San Antonio about two years ago.

“If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be the man I was trying to build myself to be for him,” he said.

He added that he had been working on himself in hopes of gaining custody of his son.

“Me and my son’s bond was very inseparable, it was,” Stevenson said. “Just like his bond with his little sister.”

Stevenson said he does not want to jump to conclusions. Instead, he is waiting for investigators to determine exactly what happened Saturday.

“What I really want is the truth, just like everybody in the family just really wants to know the truth, because that’s the only way I can really move on to find my closure,” he said.

In the meantime, Stevenson said he is finding comfort knowing Sevani is with the sister he loved so much.

“You know they’re not here anymore, but at the same time, they are still together,” he said.

On Tuesday night, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said autopsies had been performed on both children. However, the medical examiner is waiting on toxicology reports before determining the cause and manner of death.

The sheriff’s office also said, “Deputies have responded to several calls for service at the residence in the past, but those were informational in nature. We are working with Child Protective Services to determine the extent of CPS’s history and involvement with the suspect in this case.”
