‘They got away with about $15,000’ | Security guard accused of setting up armed robbery at San Antonio game room

Investigators said one of the suspects fired a shot inside the business, but no one was injured.

SAN ANTONIO — A security guard is accused of helping orchestrate an armed robbery at a northwest-side game room early Friday in which a gun was fired inside the business, police said.

The robbery occurred around 6:40 a.m. at Spin to Win Game Room at 5205 Fredericksburg Road near Callaghan Road. Surveillance video shows two masked men entering the business and holding employees at gunpoint while several customers were inside, according to authorities.

The game room’s owner, Sahelm Zghoul said there were four customers and two employees — including a security guard and a cashier — inside at the time.

“They came in and they held the employees at gunpoint,” Zghoul said. “It was scary. They did fire a gunshot inside.”

Police said the suspects attacked the security guard and took his gun before moving toward the back of the business, pointing a weapon at customers and demanding money.

One person ran into a rear restroom and refused to come out. Investigators said one of the suspects fired a shot toward the bathroom door, but no one was injured.

The suspects located the store’s cash register and took about $15,000 in cash, the owner said. While the men were focused on taking the money, employees and customers fled the business.

Within about 45 minutes, an East patrol officer stopped three men in a black Dodge Charger who were wearing clothing matching that of the suspects seen in the surveillance video, authorities said. Officers also found guns, backpacks and the stolen cash register inside the vehicle.

“All cash was recovered,” the owner said. “We got everything back.”

During questioning, two of the suspects told investigators that the game room’s security guard, identified as 32-year-old Riondo Lozell Murphy, helped plan the robbery, according to an arrest affidavit. The suspects told police Murphy had been in contact with them by phone before the robbery and advised them on when it would be a good time to target the business.

Investigators said one suspect provided call logs linking Murphy to the robbery. Authorities showed the suspects a photo of Murphy, and they identified him as the security guard who worked at the business.

“One of our security guards was involved in the robbery,” the owner said. “He was, I guess, the main guy to set it up, so it disappointed me honestly in trusting somebody like that.”

Murphy and the three other suspects are facing multiple charges of armed robbery. It was not immediately clear whether Murphy has retained an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The owner said he wanted to speak publicly to reassure customers that the business remains safe and secure following the incident.
