‘They need to be held accountable’ | Mother of 14 year-old Simon Cuevas breaks silence, calls for justice after police say son was ambushed

“I know that I can’t get my son back, and that’s the hardest thing that I have to accept,” said Alejandra Cuevas, Simon’s mother.

SAN ANTONIO — Saturday evening Simon’s family came together, along with friends and members of the community, at the spot where he was gunned down.

“It just breaks my heart to know, that I was at work, and he was laying right here,” said Alejandra Cuevas, Simon’s mother.

Alejandra broke her silence and spoke with the media for the first time as she remembered her son.

“He was very kind-hearted. He had a really good heart. He was nice to everyone. He was respectful, helpful,” said Cuevas.

Police say 14 year-old Simon was fatally shot on April 16 at the corner of South Elmendorf and Merida Street on the city’s west side. Police say Simon was walking home from Brewer Academy, where he was a student.

Alejandra says when the shooting happened, she was monitoring updates on her phone as the school was on lockdown. Then on Facebook, she learned the victim was a teen.

“I didn’t want to believe that it could be our son. I would have never believed, that it would be him,” said Cuevas.

Police say Simon was ambushed by at least seven other teenagers, and no arrest have been made in the case.

Simon’s Grandmother, Rebecca Escajeda, had a message for those responsible for his death.

“I just want to tell the parents of those kids that were involved, that we know where he’s at, and he’s with the Lord,” said Escajeda.

Alejandra says something like this happening was always one of her worst fears and feels like she’s in a dream, waiting to wake up.

“I know that I can’t get my son back, and that’s the hardest thing that I have to accept, so for them to pay for what they did, they need to be held accountable,” said Cuevas.

If you know any information about the shooting, you can contact the San Antonio Police Department.
