‘This is for you, Sovia’ | San Antonio remembers legacy of late Spurs superfan

For nearly 30 years, Sovia Lauriano, known as the “Spurs Lady,” was the heartbeat of Spurs Nation.

SAN ANTONIO — For nearly three decades Sovia Lauriano, known in the community as the “Spurs Lady,” wasn’t just a fan of the San Antonio Spurs.

She was also a living legend in her own right, her love for the Silver & Black with comparison and radiating at every game, rally and celebration in the Alamo City.

Her journey as a die-hard fan began nearly 30 years ago, after attending a game recognition ceremony for her grandson. That moment sparked a passion that turned into a way of life.

Sovia became a season-ticket holder and dedicated herself to celebrating the Spurs in every way possible. She reportedly died this month, leaving behind a standard for her fellow San Antonians to live up to.

“She was always the first one in line, the first at events, and her blinged-out outfits at every game were iconic,” said Pepe Esquivel, president of the Baseline Bums, a group of Spurs fans organized decades ago. “She was a huge part of the organization.”

Sovia’s passion for the Spurs went beyond fandom—it was her identity. Her home, her handmade outfits and even her Spurs-themed truck stood as shining tributes to the team.

She wasn’t just cheering for the Spurs; she was inspiring a community.

“She inspired the Baseline Bums with her medals and uniforms,” Esquivel said. “Her creativity and passion were truly outstanding. Sovia wasn’t just part of Spurs Nation. She was Spurs Nation.”

For other fans, Sovia’s vibrant personality and elaborate costumes left a lasting impact.

“Her costumes were out of this world,” one fan said. “She’d get stopped everywhere by people asking about them. It’s hard to imagine a game without her energy.”

Her legacy isn’t just tied to the games. Sovia’s devotion to the Spurs was a reflection of her love for San Antonio, a city that she proudly called home.

As Esquivel puts it, “Sovia’s spirit lives on. We’ll miss her dearly, but she’ll never be forgotten. This is for you, Sovia: GO SPURS GO!”
