SAN ANTONIO — With the San Antonio Spurs nearing 60 wins and Victor Wembanyama making the MVP race interesting ahead of the team’s first playoff action in years, excitement continues to build for fans of San Antonio’s only major professional sports team.
A furniture store in Bexar County is leaning in and giving them another reason to cheer—particularly if they’re looking for a new couch or ottoman.
Staff at Bob Mills Furniture, which hast locations on the northwest side as well as off Interstate 35 in Schertz, said anyone who stops by and makes a purchase from now through April 12 – the last day of the NBA’s regular season – will get their furniture for free if the Spurs end up winning it all this summer.
“San Antonio is a basketball city,” Mills said in a press release from the store. “People here rally around the team and we wanted to give customers a way to feel part of that excitement in a real, tangible way.”
It’s still a bit of a gamble for customers. Though San Antonio’s remarkable turnaround season has been one of the league’s biggest stories, beating expectations and winning the championship in Wembanyama’s third year would almost certainly require battling and beating teams with far more playoff experience than the Spurs’ young core.
Entering Friday, they have a 59-18 record and sit at No. 2 in the Western Conference, still with a shot at catching up to defending champion Oklahoma City for the top seed. Two games separate the contenders.
Mills referred to the promotion – reminiscent of deals offered by Houston’s Mattress Mack during Astros playoff runs – as “one of those ‘why-not’ moments” for San Antonians.
But customers must still put down at least 20% on their furniture when making the purchase, which have to be done in-store; that would be refunded later if San Antonio wins the Final, which are scheduled to begin June 3.
