Thousands of flights canceled in North Texas during nationwide winter storm; DFW under ground stop

The winter weather continues in North Texas Sunday, with sleet, freezing rain and snow all a possibility across North Texas.

DALLAS — Thousands of flights have been canceled in North Texas as the ongoing winter storm continues to move through the Metroplex.

By 5:30 a.m. Monday, over 400 flights had been cancelled in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The bulk of the cancellations were for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where over 350  flights on Monday morning had been cancelled, according to FlightAware

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was placed under a ground stop on Monday morning, from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m., according to the FAA

The winter weather was expected to begin in North Texas late Friday night and into Sunday, with sleet, freezing rain, and snow all a possibility across North Texas through the weekend.

Thousands of flights were cancelled at DFW and Dallas Love Field Airports on Saturday, which will likely have a knock-on effect through early this week. Already, dozens of flights are expected to be cancelled on Monday. 

Dallas Love Field, which has significantly fewer daily flights than DFW Airport, had 81 cancellations for Monday, as of early Monday morning.
