Thousands of students in San Antonio ISD are heading back to class for their first day

SAN ANTONIO — More than 40,000 students in San Antonio ISD are in class for the first day of school.

Compared to 2024, the district has 1,500 more students registered this year to start the year.

San Antonio ISD is ready to welcome students at all their campuses.

We’re at Baskin Elementary and parents started dropping their kids off at 6:30 a.m.

Staff here are ready to go, but SAISD does have some schools they are still working to repurpose.

Over the last two years, SAISD has closed 15 campuses to save money.

Teachers and students were moved around to improve learning in the classroom.

SAISD district leaders say more studies need to be done to see if some of these campuses can be converted into community spaces and affordable housing.

The district will start accepting ideas in the coming weeks.

For the statewide cell phone ban, the San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees plan to meet on August 18 to decide how they want to enforce it.

The state’s deadline for the cell phone ban is September 1.
