Three children killed about an hour north of DFW area, officials say

The crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. 69 near Penny Road in Grayson County, according to officials.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas — Three children were killed in a three-vehicle crash in Grayson County Friday, officials say.

The crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on U.S. 69 near Penny Road, according to officials.

A Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound on U.S. 69 when traffic began to slow and the driver, identified as Hyrum Grandy, 40, of Lone Oak, veered onto the shoulder to avoid a crash, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

When Grandy got back into the southbound lane, he hit a Ford F150 driven by Angel Martinez, 34, of Celest, and went into the northbound lane, officials say.

A Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Lane Recer, 29, of Trenton, then hit the left side of Grandy’s Elantra, according to DPS.

The three children in the Elantra with Grandy – aged 10, 13, and 14 – were killed in the crash, according to DPS.

No additional details were available from Texas DPS.

The crash remains under investigation.
