San Antonio Police say Jason Huizar’s death marks the first murder of 2025.
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio’s first murder of 2025 is of a father who was gunned down on New Year’s Day. Jason Huizar was shot and killed after what family believes could have been a dispute.
Alex Mares is the mother to Huizar’s three children. She and the rest of the family are demanding answers.
“You just shoot somebody,” she said. “It is not okay. Three kids without a father, now that’s not okay.”
Huizar was shot and killed off Paso Chico Alley near south Brazos Street. San Antonio Police said his death marks the first murder of 2025. Mares showed up to the scene on Wednesday when she got the terrible news.
“The detectives were telling me there was an altercation, and just that the guy pulled out the gun and shot him,” she said.
The family said Huizar was a man who loved to dance and loved his kids.
“That’s all they are going to know is that my father died,” she said. “He is gone, and I can’t have him back.”
SAPD said witnesses saw another man running from the where shots came from. Police said they caught up to that man and arrested him for a felony warrant. But, investigators aren’t saying if he is connected to the shooting.
Jesse Hinojosa, Huizar’s brother, said he misses him.
“He made everybody happy, and made everybody smile,” he said. “Everybody loved him.”
On Friday, SAPD didn’t say if any arrests had been made in the case only saying it is still an active investigation.
“I want to know why this happened,” Hinojosa said. “I want to know why.”
“I want him to get what deserves,” Mares said. “Not just a slap on the wrist.”
On Saturday, the family is raising funds for the burial. They are hosting a plate sale started at 11am on January 4 at the corner of Culebra & NW 24th at Monarch Dental. They will be selling plates for $12.
