Three people hurt in Mont Belvieu explosion, plant fire, officials say

The fire at the ONEOK plant on SH 146 in Chambers County sent three workers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a spokesman said.

MONT BELVIEU, Texas — Mont Belvieu firefighters responded to a plant explosion and fire late Monday morning.

The blast happened around 11 a.m. at the ONEOK MBC Maintenance plant on SH 146 near SH 99 in Chambers County, northeast of Houston.

Three workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to a city spokesman. All other workers have been accounted for, according to the City of Mont Belvieu.

Firefighters brought the fire under control, but video from AIR 11 shows extensive damage. 

The fire department said the blast could be heard around Mont Belvieu. A resident said she didn’t hear it but the force of the explosion shook her house.

The city says there is no immediate threat to the public.

All roads in the area remained open.

ONEOK issued a statement, saying:

We are aware of a fire at our Mont Belvieu, Texas, facility. Safety is a core value at ONEOK, and we appreciate the quick response of local emergency responders. The fire was quickly extinguished. All personnel are accounted for, and the facility is now stabilized. We will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause and resume operations when it is safe to do so.

According to its website, ONEOK has 60,000 miles of pipelines that “transport the natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), refined products and crude oil that help meet domestic and international energy demand, contribute to energy security and provide safe, reliable and responsible energy solutions needed today and into the future.”

ONEOK is based in Tulsa but they have several facilities in Texas.
