Thunderbirds, parachutes & freedom vibes: The Great Texas Airshow roars back to San Antonio

The Great Texas Airshow returns to JBSA-Randolph May 2–3 with the Thunderbirds, Golden Knights, and free high-flying fun for the whole family.

SAN ANTONIO — Get ready to look up, San Antonio. Way up.

The Great Texas Airshow is landing back at Joint Base San Antonio–Randolph on May 2–3, bringing some of the loudest, fastest and most jaw-dropping aerial talent in the country, including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights.

And yes… it’s free.

This year’s theme, “Let Freedom Roar; Honoring 250 Years,” promises a weekend packed with patriotic power, precision flying and enough jet noise to rattle your snacks.

Gates open at 9 a.m. both days, with aerial performances taking off at 11 a.m., giving early birds plenty of time to grab a good viewing spot before the sky fills with fighter jets and flying formations.

Beyond the Thunderbirds’ heart-pounding maneuvers and the Golden Knights’ high-altitude parachute drops, the show will feature military demonstration teams flying the C-17, KC-46 and the sleek F-22 fighter jet. Static aircraft displays will be on the ground too, with support from every branch of the military. Organizers note that scheduled acts are subject to change.

Military families get an early treat on Friday, May 1, when the base hosts a Military Appreciation Day for Department of War ID cardholders. The day includes a STEM fair with cyber-themed activities and aerial practice demonstrations ahead of the main weekend event.

Translation: planes, science, parachutes and freedom, all in one place.

So charge your phone, grab the sunscreen and get ready for some serious sky-watching. San Antonio’s airspace is about to put on a show.
