Tonight is a deciding Game 7 between Houston and Golden State. Here’s how the Rockets have fared in past Game 7s.

This will be the 12th time the Houston Rockets have been in a Game 7. Here’s a history of how they’ve done as a franchise in the past.

HOUSTON — Sunday night’s game is for all the marbles.  It’s the Houston Rockets hosting Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors. The winner advances to take on Minnesota in the next round. The loser is done.

While the playoffs may be unfamiliar territory for this young Rockets team, they managed to pull back to even at three games apiece with the Warriors, led by playoff veterans Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler.

Heading into the franchise’s 13th-ever Game 7, we wanted to look at the Rockets record in previous best-of-seven deciding games.

Here’s a breakdown of those wins and losses.

  • 1981 – Beat the Spurs in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals before losing to the Celtics in the NBA Finals
  • 1993 – Lost Game 7 to the Seattle SuperSonics (now the OKC Thunder) in the Western Conference Semifinals
  • 1994 – Beat the Suns in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals and then the New York Knicks in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to win their first NBA championship
  • 1995 – Beat the Suns in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The Rockets would eventually win their second of two back-to-back championships that season
  • 1997 – Beat the Supersonics in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals before losing to the Jazz in the Western Conference Finals
  • 2005 – Lost Game 7 to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs
  • 2007 – Lost Game 7 to the Utah Jazz in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs
  • 2009 – Lost Game 7 to the Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals
  • 2015 – Beat the LA Clippers in Game 7 in the Western Conference Semifinals before falling to Golden State in the Western Conference Finals, 4-1
  • 2018 – Lost Game 7 against the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals
  • 2020 – Beat Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs before losing to the Lakers in five games in the Western Conference Semifinals

Overall, the Rockets are 7-5 all-time in Game 7s.

Golden State has beaten Houston in their only head-to-head Game 7. In fact the Warriors have topped the Rockets in all four playoff series together — two trends Houston hopes to reverse once this one’s over.
