Tornado disrupts Hill Country brewery, community rallies to reopen

SPRING BRANCH, Texas — A tornado touched down and ripped through the Hill Country Friday night.

The National Weather Service confirmed that EF-1 winds did all the damage, along with straight-line winds and heavy rain, that tore through just north of Canyon Lake.

Out in Spring Branch, a local brewery had to shut down after that tornado made its way through.

That tornado ripped through Star Republic Brewery, and the employees are afraid of not being able to open for the next few weeks, and they’re unsure what will happen come winter.

“We’re no strangers to storms and bad times,” assistant brewer at Star Republic Brewry in Spring Branch, Bolten Leafa said.

Already washed out by the July Fourth floods, a tornado is not what Leafa needed.

Their building was left untouched, but outdoor seating was torn apart, including a sunshade that was also stolen by the tornado.

Tree limbs are now everywhere, and there’s even more damage in the back.

Losing power for hours, Leafa and his colleagues had to close up.

“It definitely is a curve in the road that no one wants to sit in front of,” he said. “Power was out for 13 hours or so.”

They had to get the equipment back up and running so they wouldn’t lose product or community.

But they plan to make it through once again, opening in one or two weeks.

“20 or 30 guys who love to come out here on Fridays, real tight community out here on Friday evenings.”
