
San Antonio police say a man died after fleeing a traffic stop and entering the water at Elmendorf Lake where he drowned.
SAN ANTONIO — A man drowned early Friday after fleeing from officers who attempted to stop him for a bicycle violation on the west side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
SAPD said the incident began around 3 a.m. in the 4200 block of West Commerce Street, near Elmendorf Lake. Officers attempted to stop a man between 25 and 30-years-old for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, which investigators said violates a city ordinance.
According to officials, the man fled from officers, who briefly pursued him before losing sight of him. Officers searched the area and reported hearing someone in distress near the lake.
Police said the man appeared to have jumped into the water. An officer entered the lake in an attempt to rescue him but lost sight of him during the effort, according to SAPD.
Texas Game Wardens were called to the scene and recovered the man’s body. SAPD said the man drowned.
No additional details about the man’s identity have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
