Judge Joel Perez aims to accelerate the trial of Stephen Clare, charged with severe crimes against his family, as jury selection is set for March.
SAN ANTONIO — The judge in the trial against Stephen Clare is hoping to move forward with the case in the new year.
Clare is charged with capital murder of a child in the death of his 11-month old baby daughter. He is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Back on April 10, 2023, Clare is accused of shooting his wife, Mariah Gardner, and stabbing his two daughters, 11- month-old Willow and two-year-old Rosalie. Willow did not survive her injuries. Mariah and Rosalie were both critically injured but survived. The attack took place at the family’s home in the 500 block of Robinhood Place near Alamo Heights.
Judge Joel Perez is presiding over the case and wants jury selection to happen in March. The state and defense are anticipating the process will take four weeks.
The district attorney is seeking the death penalty in this case. Clare has pled not guilty to the charges.
