Perez’s family says the 46-year-old was experiencing a schizophrenic episode when police were alerted to her home.
SAN ANTONIO — The final hearing before the trial for three former San Antonio police officers in connection to the killing of Melissa Perez is set to begin Wednesday.
Eleazar Alejandro, Alfred Flores and Nathaniel Villalobos are accused in 46-year-old’s 2023 shooting death.
The trial for these former officers begins just two weeks after a wrongful death lawsuit against them was thrown out.
Now, Perez’s family wants justice as all three ex-officers face a murder charge.
Perez’s daughter spoke with KENS 5 last week saying she’s following her faith through this next step in her mother’s case.
Loved ones claim on that night in 2023, Perez was suffering a mental health crisis and experiencing a schizophrenic episode. They say she believed the FBI was listening to her through her fire alarms, prompting her to tamper with them, which alerted authorities to her apartment.
Perez allegedly threw a hammer at the three ex-officers. They in turn shot and killed her, according to authorities.
Attorney for two of the three ex-officer’s, Nico LaHood, said today is just the beginning.
“I’m told the evidence will be presented on Friday. If we sit the jury by Friday. We may need an extra day then it’ll start Monday,” said LaHood.
