Trials set to begin for father and stepmother accused in death of young son

SAN ANTONIO — A father and stepmother charged in connection with the death of a young boy is on the docket to go forward with a trial after a long series of delays.

Derrick Coles, 35, has spent some time in jail but he has also been out of bond a while after his boy died three years ago.

Police say 12-year-old Danilo Coles suffered significant injuries over a period of time back in February 2022.

Police were called to the Woodland Ridge Apartments on Wurzbach near Babcock by EMS – when medics found an unresponsive 12-year-old boy. Initially, Danilo’s father said the boy slipped and fell in the shower.

But an arrest affidavit claims the child had numerous, serious injuries.

The father apparently admitted at the time that he bloodied the boy’s lip, forced him to exercise for hours, and beat him badly with a belt.

But at the hospital, medical personnel said the boy had no brain activity…that he had been badly beaten. He was pronounced dead just four hours later.

The boy’s stepmother, Kapri Cheatom, is a co-defendant in this case. Her trial was initially set up for June, but was delayed as well.

Both trials are set to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
