Trump announces he wants to rename Fort Cavazos back to Fort Hood

While speaking at Fort Bragg, Trump stated he wants restore the names of several military bases that were previously named after Confederate generals.

FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — While addressing members of the military at Fort Bragg in North Carolina on June 10, President Donald Trump said he intends to “restore” the names of several U.S. military bases who had their names changed under the Biden Administration.

Trump stated he wants to restore the names of Fort Hood, Fort Pickett, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill and Fort Robert E. Lee. The names of the bases were changed based on the Naming Commission’s recommendations to remove the names and symbols honoring or commemorating the Confederate States of America.

Fort Cavazos, previously known as Fort Hood, was renamed in 2023 “in compliance with the 2021 legislation that required the removal or modification of any Department of Defense assets commemorating the Confederate States of America or anyone who voluntarily served under the Confederacy,” according to the U.S. Army.

Fort Hood was named originally named after John Bell Hood, a Confederate General from Kentucky who led forces from Texas during the Civil War, earning the rank of Brigadier General, according to the Texas State Historical Society and National Park Service.

Fort Hood was renamed in 2023 to Fort Cavazos, after Korean and Vietnam War veteran, Texas native and Medal of Honor recipient Richard E. Cavazos. Cavazos served as the III Corps commanding general from 1980 to 1982, and became the U.S. Army’s first Hispanic brigadier general and four-star general, according to the U.S. Army.
