The Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet will honor Miles Davis and John Coltrane in a special centennial tribute performance at The Carver on March 6.
SAN ANTONIO — Two jazz giants. One legendary stage. And a string quartet known for rewriting the rules of classical music.
The Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet will perform Friday, March 6 at 8 p.m. at the Carver Community Cultural Center, honoring the centennials of jazz icons Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
For more than four decades, the Turtle Island Quartet has built a reputation for blending classical string traditions with the soul and improvisation of contemporary American jazz. Led by founder David Balakrishnan, the ensemble will perform Grammy-winning interpretations of Davis and Coltrane’s most celebrated works, along with original compositions inspired by their enduring influence.
NPR Music has praised the group’s “multi-stylistic and multicultural” sound, while cellist Yo-Yo Ma once described the quartet as “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground, authentic and passionate.”
The ensemble is widely regarded as a pioneer in the “alternative strings” movement and has collaborated with renowned artists including Terence Blanchard, Leo Kottke and The Manhattan Transfer. They’ve also appeared on national platforms such as “The Today Show,” “All Things Considered” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”
The performance will take place inside the historic Jo Long Theatre at The Carver, a venue that has hosted legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and Etta James. The Carver is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tickets are $35 and available through Ticketmaster or at The Carver box office.
For jazz lovers and music fans alike, this night promises a powerful tribute to two artists whose influence still echoes through every note.
