Two animals test positive for rabies in Comal County

A raccoon in Boerne and a feral cat in Bulverde both have tested positive for rabies, officials say.

COMAL COUNTY, Texas — As summer vacation continues more people are outside enjoying the weather with two confirmed cases of rabies less than an hour apart from each other in Comal County.

It’s a good reminder to avoid contact with wildlife and unfamiliar animals.

The first was found in a feral cat in Bulverde near US Highway 281 and FM 1863. This marks the 12th confirmed rabies case in the county this year.

The second was a raccoon found in the Boerne City Lake area. The animal was picked up by Boerne Animal Care Services on Saturday, June 7, after park visitors reported it behaving unusually.

“While we are not aware of any direct human interaction with the raccoon before it was captured, this is a critical reminder to avoid all contact with wild animals,” said Stefanie Fisher, Animal Care Services Supervisor. “Rabid animals often act unpredictably, so please report any suspicious wildlife behavior immediately.”

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is typically transmitted through a bite.

Officials encourage residents to check their pets’ vaccination records and ensure their rabies shots are up to date, as this remains the most effective way to protect them from exposure.

  • Feed your pets indoors when possible.
  • Bring all pet food and water bowls inside, especially at night.
  • If pets are fed outdoors, avoid leaving food out overnight.
  • Remove clutter and debris from your yard that could provide shelter for smaller animals and attract larger predators.
  • Secure your trash bins to prevent access by wildlife.

You are also strongly advised never to approach or touch wild animals, regardless of how they appear.

To report unusual animal behavior or sightings, call the Boerne Police non-emergency line at (830) 249-8645 and an animal control officer or Boerne police officer will be dispatched.

If you live in Comal County, you can also report to Comal County Animal Control at (830) 608-2016.
