AUSTIN, Texas — A 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy are facing capital murder charges after a man was shot and killed while trying to recover his stolen car in Del Valle this month.
The Austin Police Department said the juvenile suspects are both charged with capital murder by terror threat over the May 3 incident.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), a 911 call came in just before 3 a.m. from a family reporting their vehicle was stolen from their driveway in the Sun Chase Neighborhood. Around 3:21 a.m., another 911 call reported a person had been hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Ross Road and Thome Valley Drive, near Del Valle Elementary School.
Investigators believe 20-year-old Anthony Salas was shot, hit with a vehicle and killed as he attempted to recover the stolen car near the intersection.
Police said the people were seen on multiple cameras burglarizing multiple vehicles throughout South and East Austin on Friday night into Saturday morning.
The incident is being investigated as Austin’s 23rd homicide of 2025.
