Two confirmed dead after plane crash at 68th and Stevenson Avenue

Crews are currently on the scene; further details will be provided as they become available.

ODESSA, Texas — Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis has confirmed that two people died in the single pilot plane crash that happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Odessa Fire Rescue dispatched multiple units to the 6800 block of Alderfer Avenue in response to the incident. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and flames engulfing several mobile homes and shop buildings.

Significant damage was also reported to power lines and a business on Yukon, including Dewey Breakfast Shop. Oncor reported less than 400 structures are without power within the area.  Ector County Youth Center, which is located half a mile from the crash site, has partial power.

Witnesses indicated that a small aircraft had taken off from Schlemeyer. The City of Odessa stated that initial damage shows the aircraft struck power lines on Yukon and traveled nearly a block before crashing in the alley near 68th Street, between Alderfer Avenue and Stevenson Avenue.

The aircraft has been identified as a single pilot Cessna Citation 550. The identities of those onboard have yet to be released.

The post also noted that Odessa Fire Rescue successfully rescued a woman from a burning trailer home, and she has been transported to the hospital.

The department reported two vehicles and a carport were engulfed in flames and that firefighters are working to contain the fire from reaching a nearby house.

The fire was extinguished an hour later.

Crews are currently on the scene and the local American Red Cross is providing “a temporary evacuation shelter in response to the plane crash this morning,” according to Executive Director Tracy Austin.

Anyone who is affected can go to the chapter office at 4241 Tanglewood Lane in Odessa. For more information, call Austin directly at 432-530-6886 or email tracy.austin@redcross.org.
