Two confirmed dead after plane crash in Ector County

Drivers are to avoid Stevenson, Alderfer, Benefield and Yukon at this time.

ODESSA, Texas — Two people were confirmed dead after a small aircraft crashed into a heavy residential area in North Odessa Tuesday morning. 

Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis stated in a press conference that the crash happened around 7 a.m.

Along with the two deaths, there was one reported injury. That person is under hospital care.

Odessa Fire Rescue dispatched multiple units to the 6800 block of Alderfer Avenue in response to the incident. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and flames engulfing several mobile homes and shop buildings.

There is significant damage to power lines and a businesses on Yukon, including Dewey Breakfast Shop. 

At one point, Oncor reported less than 400 structures are without power within the area.  

Ector County Youth Center, which is located half a mile from the crash site, reported partial power Tuesday morning. The Alternative Education Center reported no power which resulted in those students sent to Wilson and Young Middle School. 

Witnesses indicated that a small aircraft had taken off from Schlemeyer, then it clipped power lines and crashed in an alleyway between Stevenson Avenue and Alderfer Avenue.

The aircraft has been identified as a single pilot Cessna Citation 550 by the National Transportation Safety Board via Twitter:

Identities of those onboard have yet to be released. 

The fire was extinguished an hour later.

The local American Red Cross is providing “a temporary evacuation shelter in response to the plane crash this morning,” according to Executive Director Tracy Austin.
