Two people killed in late-night house fire on San Antonio’s west side

Two people died after being pulled from a burning home late Monday night on South San Dario on San Antonio’s west side, officials said.

SAN ANTONIO — Two people have died after a house fire late Monday night on San Antonio’s west side.

San Antonio firefighters were called to the 400 block of South San Dario near West Commerce Street around 10:49 p.m. after reports of a structure fire.

According to a battalion chief with the San Antonio Fire Department, crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from a single-story home with a metal roof, surrounded by an iron fence and burglar bars, obstacles that made rescue efforts more difficult.

Fire officials said a woman who called 911 became trapped inside a closet after being separated from her husband. Firefighters were able to pull her from the side of the home. Her husband was rescued from the back of the house.

Both were rushed to BAMC in unknown condition.

Based on the extent of the damage visible from outside, the battalion chief said the home is believed to be a total loss.

San Antonio police later confirmed that both victims were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
