Dozens of Starbucks locations that are closing this weekend have been identified by employees and confirmed through the coffee chain’s website.
SAN ANTONIO — Two San Antonio Starbucks locations are among the dozens of stores of the popular coffee chain that closed over the weekend.
The company has not said the exact number of stores that are closing. However, Starbucks said it expects to have 18,300 North American locations when its fiscal year ends on Sunday, which is down 124 from last year.
Two San Antonio locations closed Sunday as part of the plan:
- 1604 & Blanco Road location: 18154 Blanco Road
- Bandera & Guilbeau location: 8407 Bandera Road
Initially, only the Blanco Road location was mentioned on the official list of store closures by the coffee chain, but employees and the Starbucks app confirmed the Bandera and Guilbeau location.
In a letter sent to employees Thursday, Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol said a review of the company’s stores identified locations where the company doesn’t see a path to financial stability or isn’t able to create the physical environment customers expect.
“Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations,” Niccol wrote. “This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult.”
Starbucks said workers in its stores will be offered transfers to other locations where possible and severance packages.
This is the second big round of layoffs at Starbucks this year. In February, Niccol announced the layoffs of 1,100 corporate employees globally and eliminated several hundred open positions. At the time, Niccol said Starbucks needed to operate more efficiently and increase accountability for decisions.
