Two students in custody after weapon found in backpack inside car on school grounds

Officers located a firearm in a backpack being carried by one of the students, which was also reported stolen.

SCHERTZ, Texas — Two students are in custody after police say they had a gun on the campus of Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz. 

The discovery was made during an after school event on Tuesday evening.  

A parent tipped off a school resource officer around 6:30 p.m. that one of the students had a gun in their car on the school grounds of Clemens High at 1001 Elbel Road. The Schertz Police Department responded to investigate.

Officers immediately began to investigate the incident with the collaboration of SCUC school administrators and were able to locate the suspects.  Officers located a firearm in a backpack being carried by one of the students, which was also reported stolen.  Officers were also able to locate the suspect’s vehicle and no additional weapons were found.

Two students were placed under arrest. One is charged with Weapon in Prohibited Places, a 2nd Degree Felony and Theft of a Firearm (a State Jail Felony), and Terroristic Threat (3rd Degree Felony), and the other juvenile is charged with Terroristic Threats, which is a 3rd Degree Felony.

“The Schertz Police Department is not aware of a threat made to the school, students, or staff at this time.  Incidents such as this are of great concern to the safety of the community, and we strive to maintain this safety,” said the Schertz Police Department. “We depend upon our working relationships with our school district and community to quickly mitigate such incidents.  In this instance a concerned parent acted promptly that helped us bring this incident to a safe conclusion.  We remind community members if you hear or see something suspicious, please report it to the police.”
