TxDOT installs memorial sign in Converse to remember motorcyclist killed in a crash

Dakarai Griffin’s daughters explain the weight their father’s memorial carries with his memory. His family says he was hit by a distracted driver.

SAN ANTONIO — In March, police said 44-year-old Dakarai Griffin lost his life in an accident at the intersection of Crestway and Gibbs Sprawl Road. His family says he was hit by a distracted driver.

Investigators said the driver of the car, a 17-year-old girl, was trying to turn left, when they crashed.

Desirae Galindo and Jazmine De La Cruz are Griffin’s daughters.

“It takes two split seconds, for not only us to lose somebody, but for that person to have to deal with the consequences of their actions,” Galindo said.

Following the tragedy, their extended family became the motorcycle clubs who they say were a source of strength for Griffin’s loved ones, especially Fallen Riders.

“In a sense, seeing our dad in them,” De La Cruz said. “The type of person our dad was.”

Griffin is remembered as a devoted family man.

“[He was] always working on his bikes, his trucks, or with his grandbabies,” De La Cruz said.

Six months later, this memorial signifies Griffin’s legacy. His daughters hope it catches people’s attention, to be mindful on the road.

“Check your blind spots, make sure you’re looking multiple times before you make your move,” Galindo said.

Fallen Riders – an organization that honors the memory of motorcyclists will be hosting a ‘Ride to Dakarai’s Memorial Site’ on Tuesday at 7p.m.
