Update: Thursday, February 29 at 11:28 a.m.

If you’re traveling on the Southeast side of town beware. That’s because a full closure of southbound I-37 at Fair Avenue is expected until 4 p.m. The closure is a result of a crash earlier Thursday morning. TxDOT says crews are removing overhead sign damaged by crash earlier this morning. Traffic will be detoured onto the frontage road. Drivers can expect delays.

Original Story:

Beware morning commuters, those traveling on the Southeast Side of San Antonio may seem some significant delays Thursday morning, February 29. Two crashes, including one major wreck, has brought traffic nearly to a halt in both directions of I-37.

According to traffic monitors, there are crashes in both directions of traffic along I-37 on the Southeast Side of the city near where the major highway meets Fair Avenue. At 6:10 a.m. Thursday morning, a major wreck left first responders blocking off all but one lane of southbound traffic, creating stop-and-go traffic for miles along the major highway.

Another wreck in the opposite lanes of traffic on I-37 has traffic backed up from Fair Avenue nearly to where the highway meets Southeast Military Drive, marking many miles and bumper-to-bumper traffic in the northbound lanes of I-37. SigAlert says the wreck is somehow tied to the wreck in the southbound lanes, but the exact cause remains unclear.

Drivers headed north on I-37 who get stuck in this traffic can also expect up to a 20 minute delay, according to SigAlert. Give yourself extra time this morning if you’re to work or school.
