TxDOT San Antonio 24-hour operation to last throughout arctic blast

They have been putting down brine on bridges and overpasses throughout the 12 county district. TxDOT said the focus is on the I-10 and I-35 corridors.

SAN ANTONIO — It is all hands-on deck right now for TxDOT. Earlier Wednesday, the state agency activated its emergency operations center.

Tanya Brown with TxDOT San Antonio said the 24-hour operation will last throughout the weather event.

“We have boots on the ground throughout the entire district,” Brown said.

She said since Monday, crews have been getting the roads ready for mother nature. They have been putting down brine on bridges and overpasses throughout the 12 county district. TxDOT said the focus are the I-10 and I-35 corridors.

“Weather sometimes is tricky and changes at the last minute,” she said. “We want to make sure our resources are spread throughout the district.”

Brown said the three areas they’re closely watching are Kerr, Kendall and Bandera counties.

“We can move personnel and equipment if need be,” she said. “And I think we have done a little bit of that today.”

Brown also had a reminder for businesses or people who live off of frontage roads.

“Disable their sprinkler systems during this winter storm,” she said. “A lot of times we see people tend to forget to take them off the timer and then that makes it for icy conditions on the frontage roads.”

Brown said if you do get stranded to remain in your car, and if it’s dark out to always have the hazard lights on. She said you can also call for assistance at the number on the back of the Texas driver’s license: (800) 525-5555.
