TxDOT to open Loop 1604 flyover ramp within minutes after years-long construction

It may seem like construction in San Antonio is never-ending, but projects aimed at relieving congestion are reaching major milestones. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will open a new flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange on Monday, October 6, marking the fifth to be completed in the past 10 months.

The ramp is based on the northwest side of the city near The Shops at La Cantera. TxDOT says it is expected to open by 5 a.m. and gives drivers a direct connection from westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 1604.

Drivers can access it by taking UTSA Boulevard and entering the main lanes of Loop 1604 after passing Lockhill Selma Road. Those leaving the ramp will take the Northwest Military Highway exit. There, they’ll access the Loop 1604 eastbound frontage road.

It’s expected to make travel easier in an area known for dining, recreational centers, and shopping, making it a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. Similar efforts target other high-traffic neighborhoods in San Antonio, are all part of the broader Loop 1604 North Expansion project.

TxDOT spokesperson Jennifer Serold previously described it as a “$1.4 billion investment designed to improve mobility and reduce congestion along 23 miles of the corridor across north Bexar County.”

“The project is planned in six separate segments, with four segments currently under construction,” Serold previously told MySA.

The ramp’s unveiling signals a turning point in the project, as it means progress has finally passed the halfway point. Eight flyovers are expected to be open by the end of 2026, meaning three remain unfinished.

The first flyover opened in December 2024 and connects residents heading eastbound on Loop 1604 to the westbound lanes of I-10. The second opened in June 2025 and provides access from westbound I-10 to westbound Loop 1604. The third, which brings those on westbound Loop 1604 to eastbound I-10, opened in August and is the tallest ramp in the Alamo City. The fourth opened last month and connects folks on eastbound Loop 1604 to eastbound I-10.

Construction is set to continue in town, but hopefully, with each new ramp, the disruptions will be minimized. TxDOT says it’s “committed to scheduling construction that creates the least impact to traffic and allows work to be completed safely.”
