SAN ANTONIO — Pedestrian deaths are rising fast and TxDOT says October is the most dangerous month of the year. With fewer daylight hours and visibility dropping, the state is launching an urgent safety push right here in San Antonio starting Monday.
According to TxDOT data, in the San Antonio area last year there were 769 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, resulting in 83 pedestrian fatalities and 168 serious injuries.
With all this in mind, TxDOT is bringing its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” pedestrian safety campaign to the Alamo City. The agency’s data also shows pedestrian-involved traffic crashes are still on the rise across Texas – up 25% from 2020 through 2024. TxDOT says October is the deadliest month for pedestrians in the state.
“Fewer daylight hours mean it can be harder to see people walking. While most of us look forward to fall for the milder weather, the shorter days bring extra risk for people out and about on foot. TxDOT is calling on Texans to do what they do best — look out for one another so we can all stay safe,” Michael Terán, TxDOT traffic safety program manager said.
TxDOT advises pedestrians to wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight in low-light conditions.
TxDOT will display the statistics at 9 a.m. Monday morning with walking billboards. They’ll be at intersections along Culebra Road between Grissom Road and Village Parkway.
