TEXAS, USA — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is warning drivers not to fall victim for scam texts claiming people have unpaid or past due toll bills.
Several TxTag customers have reported that they received text messages claiming to have a toll balance that must be paid. TxDOT says these phishing/smishing scams have been reoccurring since April 2024, but have spiked more recently.
TxDOT added that they are working to take down fraudulent websites to try and prevent customers from becoming victims. Below are sample photos of what the texts could look like if you get one.
TxDOT warns of toll text scam
TxTag says that while they communicate with customers via email, text and outbound phone calls, it will never send text messages regarding final payment reminders or past-due balances. And any messages sent from TxTag wiil be sent from 22498.
To avoid a text scam like this, the Federal Trade Commission recommends the following:
- Don’t click on any links in, or respond to, unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly, but it’s best to stop and check it out.
- Check to see if the text is legit. Reach out to the state’s tolling agency using a phone number or website you know is real — not the info from the text.
- Report and delete unwanted text messages. Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward them to 7726 (SPAM). Once you’ve checked it out and reported it, delete the text.
TxDOT asks customers to contact TxTag Customer Service directly at TxTag.org or by calling 1-888-468-9824 if they are to receive suspicious texts regarding toll payments.
