It’s happening again, y’all. The Texas Department of Transportation is shutting down a major section of Loop 1604 every night this week as part of its $1.4 billion overhaul of the major San Antonio highway.
Starting Thursday, March 21, TxDOT announced the westbound lanes of Loop 1604 from the Lockhill Selma Road exit ramp all the way to the intersection with I-10 will be shut down from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. The closures will run through the weekend, ending on Saturday, March 23.
Drivers traversing the Northside of San Antonio will be pushed off the highway at Lockhill Selma Road and have to use the access road all the way past I-10. While it’s not too crazy of a closure, it will mean drivers will have to add a couple of stop lights to their highway travels whether they’re continuing west on Loop 1604 or hoping to hop on I-10.
This is all part of the third phase of a multi-phase project that will revamp 23 miles of Loop 1604, turning the major city thoroughfare into a 10-lane highway with high-occupancy vehicles lanes in each direction. The intersection of Loop 1604 and I-10 is also already starting to look a whole lot different, and in the end, it’ll be a series of stacked connector ramps rather than the iconic four-leaf-clover design that’s been there for decades. On the upside, TxDOT seems to be making quick progress with the initial phases of the project.
“Ready for less congestion on Loop 1604? Good news! Segment 1 of the expansion, from SH 16 to I-10, is approximately 70% complete,” the TxDOT San Antonio office tweeted Wednesday. “By early 2025, drivers will have a smoother commute as they travel in NW Bexar County.”
