Construction on Loop 1604 and I-10 returns this weekend in Northwest San Antonio, and drivers are urged to plan ahead. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says closures will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, October 3. Although the work is scheduled for overnight hours, officials warn it could still create significant traffic delays in the area.
“This weekend nightly closure is expected from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2025 through Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, weather permitting. Law enforcement will direct traffic through intersections during this time, as needed. Please follow detour signage,” TxDOT warns.
The scheduled closures will affect multiple stretches of Loop 1604 and I-10. Starting with Loop 1604 eastbound, where the mainlanes will close from the exit ramp after La Cantera Parkway to the entrance ramp after NW Military Highway, TxDOT says. On the westbound side, the frontage road will be closed from Vance Jackson to the I-10 interchange. Drivers should also expect a right-lane closure on the Loop 1604 westbound mainlanes at the I-10 interchange, along with the westbound exit ramp just before the I-10 interchange.
On I-10 eastbound, alternating mainlane closures are planned at the Loop 1604 interchange, and the eastbound frontage road will be closed from Via La Cantera to Loop 1604. The I-10 westbound frontage road will also be closed at the Loop 1604 interchange. In addition, the cloverleaf ramp from I-10 eastbound to Loop 1604 eastbound will be closed.
If you must drive in the area during the closures, TxDOT offers alternative routes to get to your destination. Those driving eastbound on Loop 1604 will need to exit Vance Jackson, follow the eastbound frontage road, and re-enter past NW Military Highway.
If you’re driving westbound on Loop 1604, TxDOT says to turn around at Vance Jackson, loop back at Lockhill-Selma and re-enter the westbound frontage road before continuing toward Kyle Seale Parkway or I-10.
For drivers on westbound frontage road of Loop 1604 and the eastbound frontage road of I-10, you’ll need to take the detour through Via La Cantera to the westbound lanes of Loop 1604. Drivers will then take the turnaround at La Cantera Parkway to reconnect to I-10 eastbound.
The weekend-long construction is all part of a larger goal, outlined in the Loop 1604 North Expansion project.
“The Loop 1604 North Expansion is a $1.4 billion investment designed to improve mobility and reduce congestion along 23-miles of the corridor across north Bexar County. The project is planned in six separate segments with four segments currently under construction,” TxDOT spokesperson Jennifer Serold previously told MySA.
The massive project is expected to be completed in 2028, TxDOT says.
