Eddie Reyes, 36, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after mistakenly shooting a driver he thought stole his car.
SAN ANTONIO — An Uber driver was shot in the face Friday morning in what police say was a misunderstanding, according to police.
Police were called to the intersection of Console and IH-10 West for a shooting in progress around 6:15 a.m. Friday.
Once there, they found a man in a green Kia Soul who they say was shot in the face while dropping off a passenger.
Police say the incident happened around 6 a.m. when the Uber driver was on Wurzbach Road.
The passenger, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, said that the white truck pulled behind the Uber driver and yelled at him to pull over, according to an arrest affidavit.
Confused, the Uber driver turned his vehicle from Wurzbach to head south on the IH-10 West access road, according to police. That’s when the suspect, 36-year-old Eddie Reyes, pulled up beside the Kia and allegedly shot him in the face. Reyes then drove off.
After investigation, police found out that Reyes’ wife had called in a stolen vehicle report and told the dispatcher that her husband had chased after what he thought was the stolen vehicle, another green Kia Soul. The wife said her husband was armed and in another vehicle. The call came in about 20 minutes before the shooting.
Police were able to make contact with Reyes later on, who allegedly confessed to the shooting and provided the weapon he used. He admitted to shooting at his own vehicle “while it was being stolen” and then searching for it after he lost sight of it.
This is when he started chasing after what he thought was his stolen vehicle. Little did he know he was chasing another green Kia Soul that had nothing to do with the situation, shooting it and the driver in the process.
Police were able to confirm that the vehicle found at the shooting site was not Reyes’ car.
The Uber driver’s condition is unknown at this time.
Reyes has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
