
The Texas Rangers are investigating the in-custody death.
SAN ANTONIO — A man died while in custody at the Uvalde County Jail Wednesday evening, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
According to the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office, Ernesto Alonzo Amaro was apprehended by the Uvalde Police Department Tuesday and was transported to the jail.
Amaro was informed on Wednesday around 8:45 a.m. that he was going to appear before the magistrate. Amaro then tried to stand up but laid back down due to a “medical episode,” according to the press release.
Uvalde County Jail Medical and Uvalde EMS was called to the jail.
According to UCSO, Amaro was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead Wednesday evening around 7:15 p.m.
As per protocol, the sheriff’s office contacted the Texas Rangers who will conduct an independent investigation into the in-custody death. UCSO also notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and the Texas Attorney General’s Office about the death.
No other information was provided.
