UIL Realignment announced Thursday. Where did your school end up?

Coaches throughout all of South Texas gathered in San Antonio to see the new district changes.

SAN ANTONIO — UIL Athletic Realignment was Thursday around the State of Texas, with one of the biggest local stories surrounding the Alamo Heights Mules. They had played the last two years within SAISD dominating inner city competition week in and week out.

The speculation had built in recent months that the UIL was going to move AH into a new district setting, and when the box was opened at 9 a.m., the Mules got the news they were hoping for. They landed in Division Two play in District 13-5A with the likes of the Boerne Greyhounds, Kerrville Tivy, Veterans Memorial, Harlandale, McCollum and Victoria West.

“We think it is a great day,” said Alamo Heights Head Coach Ron Rittimann. “We think this turned out as well as it could have.”

The situation had really been unfair to all parties involved. The Mules were outscoring SAISD opponents by 45 points per game. The change is welcome for both Alamo Heights Football and other athletics as well as SAISD Athletics across the board.

“If you are hoping for the best scenario for your program and your athletes that happened today for us,” said Rittimann.

Jefferson Mustangs Football Head Coach Edward Cardenas offered his thoughts, too.

“It definitely helps us,” he said. “We’ll have an extra SAISD team make the playoffs. I have mixed feelings on it, but we are glad they are going to another district.”

Cardenas said SAISD will continue to be a very competitive district and that its been that way for twenty to thirty years and that it will continue to be that way when you have the inner city schools together.

We also had the chance to speak with Vets Memorial Head Coach Robert Irvin who will now compete with Alamo Heights in district play for at least the next two years.

“They are going to be a tough matchup for sure in district play, but that’s what you want. You want to play well coached teams and we are certainly in a district where that’s gonna happen.”

Rittimann said his Mules know they are gonna get challenged every single week and they are ready for it.
