A United Airlines flight was diverted to Waco Regional Airport due to severe turbulence.
WACO, Texas — Multiple flights had to make unexpected landings at the Waco Regional Airport on Sunday night due to turbulence, according to Waco Regional Airport Interim Director of Aviation Michael Reisman.
A United Airlines CRJ airplane flying from Springfield, Missouri, to Houston, Texas, with 35 people on board, was diverted to the Waco airport due to severe turbulence, Reisman said.
Five people were injured and six people, including the spouse of one injured person, were taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Waco Fire Department spokesman, Lt. Keith Guillory.
According to Reisman, the remaining passengers had to wait for another plane to continue on to Houston.
Reisman said the diverted aircraft will remain on the ground and need to be inspected before it can be flown.
Two American Airlines flights were also diverted due to weather concerns. One of those flights has already departed the airport, according to Reisman.
SkyWest released a statement about the flight.
SkyWest flight 5690, operating as United Express from Springfield, MO to Houston, landed safely at Waco Regional Airport after experiencing turbulence. Medical personnel met and evaluated passengers, and five passengers were transported to the hospital. SkyWest and United are making sure all customers get the care they need and are working to line up new transportation options for everyone on this flight.
